The Builders’ Christmas List: Tools, Training & Teamwork

December 4, 2025

As we wrap up another busy year, it’s clear that it’s not just the builds that make us proud—it’s the people behind them. The end of the year is a chance to reflect on what really matters on-site: having the right tools, proper training, and a team that’s got your back.

So in the spirit of the season, we thought we’d share what might be on the Christmas list of your average builder (hint: it’s probably not socks or novelty mugs).

1. Tools That Last

At the top of any tradesperson’s wishlist? Reliable tools that do the job properly.

For carpenters, that might mean a new DeWalt cordless drill or a sturdy set of chisels. For bricklayers, it could be a Marshalltown trowel that finally replaces the battered one they’ve been using for a decade. Laser levels, impact drivers, angle grinders—these are the gifts that say “I get what you do” better than any festive hamper.

And while many of us have our own trusted kit, it’s always appreciated when companies invest in high-quality, shared tools that improve the efficiency and accuracy of work across the team.

2. Practical Training Opportunities

A close second? The chance to upskill. Whether it’s SMSTS for site managers, SSSTS for those stepping into supervisory roles, or plant tickets like telehandler or excavator training, the best kind of gift is one that helps you level up.

We’ve seen this first-hand at MPS with recent training including Temporary Works Coordinator courses, Emergency First Aid, and fire warden training. It's not just about compliance, it’s about giving people the chance to grow and feel confident in their role. And let’s be honest, an investment in training now usually pays off tenfold later.

3. A Crew You Can Count On

You can have all the gear and qualifications in the world, but it doesn’t mean much if you don’t have a solid team around you. One of the things we’re most grateful for this year is the people. Site teams who graft hard in all weathers, office staff who keep everything ticking, and contractors we can rely on.

There’s something to be said for a team that genuinely looks out for one another. It’s what makes long days feel shorter and challenges feel manageable. And if there’s anything we’re hoping for next year, it’s more of the same.

4. Little Things That Make a Difference

Okay, okay - maybe there is a place for socks. Or at least a good quality thermal hat. At this time of year, it’s the small things that can make the day a bit more bearable. Decent coffee on-site, a reliable kettle, warm high-vis jackets, or even just someone bringing mince pies to a team meeting.

Those thoughtful touches are what keep morale up when the weather’s rough and the days are short.

Wrapping Up the Year

As we head into the festive break, we want to say a big thank you to our team, clients, and collaborators. This year’s been full-on, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here’s to a well-earned rest, a few laughs, and a strong start to the new year—tools at the ready.
